TANZANIAN Angel Eaton had the necessary clout to give Ugandans a run for their money but could only offer a feeble challenge as local competitors dominated the Uganda Ladies Golf Open over the weekend.

In the absence of Kenyan regular campaigner Mary Karano, Eaton coming off victories in the Lusaka, Mombasa and Tanzania Open tournaments was the main contender but did not shine.

That she won major tournaments on different courses enforced her chances of winning in Kampala as well. But Ugandans who swore not to lose the title lived up their word.

Flavia Namakula lurked in the shadows of Eva Okatch and Jasper Kamukama in the first two rounds before she thrust to the top in the last four holes of the tournament.

That Namakula, Okatch and Kamukama maintained impressive scores which effectively kept Eaton at bay can be attributed to the consistent training sessions the trio have had in preparation for the Africa championship in Abuja, Nigeria next week.

The number of competitors may have dwindled tremendously but the scores were almost the same. Last year Kamukama and Karano tied with an aggregate of 230 to go for playoff last year but this time Namakula’s score over three days was just two strokes higher than the winner of the previous edition.

The margin amongst the top three finishers was as close as last year.

The absence of a big contingent from Kenya and Tanzania was quite visible and took the shine off Uganda’s biggest women golf event.
