KCCL, think of giving back to the community

EDITOR: Kasese Cobalt Company Ltd (KCCL) is one of the largest investment projects in this country with investment well above $150m. Tonnes of processed cobalt are exported regularly.

EDITOR: Kasese Cobalt Company Ltd (KCCL) is one of the largest investment projects in this country with investment well above $150m. Tonnes of processed cobalt are exported regularly.

However, visiting villages neighbouring the plant, reveals that the living conditions of the people are appalling. The noise is unbearable.

The plant is supplied with water flowing from the mountains but the company cannot offer even stand tap to the residents! True, KCCL pays taxes but there is such a concept as giving back to the community.

Such companies should tell Ugandans what they contribute directly to the welfare of the 'owners' of the natural resources they exploit. Such an attitude would go a long way in improving the relationship between KCCL and its neighbours.
