GEORGINA strives to stand out, but often she is let down by puffy (swollen) eyes, especially in the morning. She tries to cover them up with makeup in vain.

Georgina believes the condition is caused by over sleeping, but doctors say, baggy or sagging eyes could be an indication that one has had less sleep or a reaction caused the eyes to get inflamed.

Dr. Milton Muyege, an optician in Kampala, says hormonal imbalance can also cause swollen eyes. The eyelids tend to thin and sag as one ages due to drop in hormones.

He says fluctuation of fluids in the body due to hormones or change in the weather or temperatures can cause eyes to become puffy.

Muyege says if the eyelids look reddish and swollen, one could have conjunctivitis. “Sometimes, the eyes swell from wearing contact lenses or as a result of the solution used to clean the lenses. Alcohol can also spark off puffy eyes because it causes the body to retain water.”

“Sometimes people may have painful and itchy eyes due to post-operation or surgical recovery. Dark circles can also present, causing the eyes to look swollen. Puffy eyes could also result from allergy, but this is usually short-lived,” Muyege says.

He adds that on rare occasions, one might have to undergo surgery, especially if the puffiness is chronic,” he explains.

Dr. Ali Munini, a general practioner at Kim Medical Centre in Kampala, says some people experience sudden tearing or watering of the eyes.

If this condition is present and one is not emotionally stressed, allergy or injury of the eyes could be the probable cause.
Sometimes the eyes swell, owing to one’s lifestyle, Munini says. Eating salty food, sleeping less, crying, sinuses, a cold and hormonal changes are the major causes of swollen eyes.

“However, if one can adjust one’s lifestyle, it is possible to reduce or preventpuffy eyes.”
