How to gracefully reject a job offer from your dream firm

HUNTING for a job is hard, yet letting go of a job offer is tougher. After the long struggle, you have got a call from your dream company, cracked the interview and the job offer.

But, for one reason or the other, be it a better deal, personal or financial obstacles, you are unable to work for that company. Roland Mukasa, a human resource officer with The Connection Recruiting Firm, encourages people in such situations to keep in touch with the offering company.

“You can call or write to them explaining the reasons you can not take up the offer because this gives you a chance of joining them in the future,” Mukasa says.

Here are some tips on declining a job offer in a way that will not harm your credibility or professional opportunities.
Ask for an extension. Most of the organisations, It is advisable for you as a candidate to ask for an extension to confirm your acceptance of the offer.

This will allow you to think through the situation while it will give the recruiter a true picture of your character.
Mukasa advises that being honest with the recruiter of your dream company enables you know more from the company.

The reason being that in most cases recruiters have better knowledge of the company they are recruiting for.

Negotiate the offer. If you are not extremely happy with the offer made by your dream company but don’t want to reject the offer and also don’t want to accept it, again talk to the recruiter and help him/her understand what’s on your mind.

The recruiter may be able to work as your mediator and help resolve the outstanding points that need to be addressed.

In this scenario, sometimes you may get what you want. But when you don’t, it might mean your expectations were beyond your limits.

Don’t beat around the bush. Pick up your phone and make a call to the recruiter as soon as possible and tell her/him what is at the back of your mind. It is better than getting calls from the company.

Experts say that rejecting the offer gracefully and explaining to the people concerned could help you link up in future.

Because this is your dream company and you may want to see yourself in this place in the future, keep that door open for yourself.
