GAETANO Kaggwa’s participation in Big Brother Africa (BBA) has boosted tourism in the country, the head of the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), Peter Kamya told Parliament yesterday.

Gaetano Kaggwa is the Ugandan participating in the BBA competition for US $100,000 (about sh200m).
Kamya said Gaetano’s participation was boosting the image of Uganda. “You may or may not believe me, but what our son Gaetano is doing in Big Brother House gives us a positive image,” Kamya said, amid excitement among MPs.

His love affair on TV with Abby Plaatjes of South Africa has attracted mixed feelings among Ugandans and people from other countries.

Kaggwa won a one-week trip to the UK, where he participated in the Big Brother United Kingdom.

The president of Malawi and the Namibian parliament have banned the screening of Big Brother Africa on national TVs saying it was immoral.

Kamya said Kaggwa’s participation had gone a long way in advertising the country, its peoples and its tourist attractions.

The MPs looked amused and wanted to know how the UTB was tapping the opportunity of celebrities to sell the country’s tourism potential.

Kamya told the MPs that Prince William’s recent visit to Bujagali and US President George W. Bush’s visit also sold the country abroad and boosted tourism in the country. “Some people thought it was Prince William’s look-alike, but he was the one. He was here,” Kamya further said.
