KAMPALA –– Makerere University department of Mass Communication has begun a radio programme to create awareness on the threats affecting Lake Victoria. Speaking at the launching of a radio programme, “Victoria Voice” recently, Dr. Goretti Nassanga said they had contracted Afrinet, a private firm to produce the programme. The Swedish International Development Corporation Agency (SIDA) funded the programmme and also supports the regional post graduate diploma course in enviromental communication.

‘Depend less on nature’
KAMPALA – Environmentalists have called for less dependence on nature because much of the conflicts in Africa are due to environmental degradation. They said environmental insecurity is due to most people depending on natural resources for their livelihood. The remarks were made at a two-day seminar organised by Partnership for African Environmental Sustainability (PAES), an international non-governmental organisation at the Nile International Conference Centre, recently.

A dustier world to come
NEW YORK – The world could be a lot less dusty in the future, scientists have predicted. The model is based on how much of the Earth’s surface is covered by deserts, how much wind is around to pick up dust and rainfall. Natalie Mahowald and Chao Luo of the National Centre for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, who developed the model, used six different scenarios for future climate, vegetation cover and land use to come up with their estimates.

Thai elephant kills three men
Bangkok – Thai forestry officials were trying to catch a domesticated bull elephant recently after the animal, frustrated at being kept away from a female, killed three men and injured a woman in northern Thailand. The elephant, named Plai Mae Sua, went on a rampage at a logging camp in Phrae province. The bull elephant chased down two Forest Industry Organisation employees and stomped them to death, went on and killed a male farmer and injured a woman at a nearby farm, according to witnesses.
