THE Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has appointed Sheik Mukiibi Kinene the new deputy Mufti. Kinene, 49, who has been the Luweero district Khadi, was unanimously appointed on Saturday during the UMSC joint session.

The session, comprising the executive committee and a team of Sheiks (muslim scholars) converged at Old Kampala, the seat of the council.

Kinene’s election was in accordance with Article 11 of the UMSC Constitution, which provides for a mufti and his deputy. It also provides for their impeachment.

He replaces Sheik Twaibu Mukuye, who died last year, the council publicist, Haji Nsereko Mutumba said. Shiek Zaidi Kavuma was appointed secretary general. The UMSC general assembly, which converged at Old Kampala, on Sunday was to confirm the appointment.

Mutumba told The New Vision that Kinene would hold the position until he is 70 years old. In an impromptu press conference, Kinene hailed the session for choosing him.

He said unity among Muslims, uplifting the standards and teaching Islam were among his top priorities. Ahmad Wadriff became the new vice-chairman of the council. He deputises city businessman, Hassan Basajjabala, who was also confirmed as chairman.

“It is the wish of the people. We are here to serve Islam,” Wadriff stated, adding that he would also ensure that Muslims are united.

“I believe we can still be united. Our brothers should come back. You cannot fire the Mufti. We need unity for development.”

A cross section of Muslim Sheiks opposed to the Mufti, Shiek Shaban Mubajje, last Thursday converged at Hotel Africana in Kampala where they formed a “Sharia Court.”

The hastily-formed court tried and sentenced Sheik Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje, condemning him to hell for committing haram (sins) against the Muslim community.

The court also prohibited Mubajje from going to any mosque anywhere in the world.
