AN elderly woman was recently knocked dead by a speeding saloon car as she attempted to cross the highway at CMS trading centre in Iganga district.

Sauya Kasiko, 75, had just disembarked from a motorcycle, when she was knocked down.
Kasiko, a farmer in nearby Kazoo village, was the chairperson of the Muslim women at the local mosque and a member of several women groups.

Her relatives said she was going to Busoga University to deliver tuition fees to her grandson, Fred Ssemugenze. Bulamagi sub-county LC3 chief Abdullah Balunywa said Kasiko was a member of FINCA, Mupende and the Basoka Kwavula Women groups.

She is reputed for sensitising women on how to improve their livelihood.

The district traffic Police, Khasule Ogwal, said Kasiko died on the spot.
Ogwal said the driver of the car attempted to flee towards Jinja but was stopped by the Highway Police patrol and taken back to Iganga.

The body of the deceased was taken to Iganga Hospital for a post-mortem examination and handed over to relatives for burial.
Balunywa called for the construction of road humps and Zebra crossings in busy trading centres on the highway.
