EDGAR Watson’s biggest task at FUFA will be to implement the federation’s four-year development plan. This comes after FUFA confirmed the former midfielder as the new chief executive officer replacing Charles Masembe who was sacked in February. Watson assumes office on April 1.

While announcing the decision, the federation publicist Rogers Mulindwa told the weekly FUFA PostBank press conference at Mengo, that Watson scored 81.5% in both oral and written interviews. The mark was nearly 20% better than his nearest rivals.

Kyambogo University lecturer Catherine Adipo, who was the only female applicant scored 65.5% and was the third on the list.

Emmanuel Gwenje had (68.5%), Godfrey Mugisha (53%), Robert Kakumba (41.5%), Naphtali Oketcho (40%) and Thompson Tayebwa (34%).

Watson, the 37-year-old former Cranes and SC Villa skipper, has been acting in the position since January.

He was confirmed yesterday after an impromptu meeting of the FUFA top executive vetted the seven candidates who had applied and sat interviews.

The four-year plan, drawn with the help of FIFA details how FUFA can develop football right from the grassroots in all parts of the country and the federation has already said that success of the programme will depend on an elaborate CEO.

Kampala firm Peka Management and Business Consultancy conducted the interviews. Watson joined the federation administration as technical director last year, a position he is to quit before he takes on his new role. He is also director of Edgars Youth Programme.

“The executive found no reason to stop Edgar from becoming the CEO. He will take office with effect from April 1. He will also cease being technical director,” (Rogers) Mulindwa said.

“We are going to consult FIFA on how to replace Watson’s post of the technical director.”
