Why is NSSF squandering our precious money?

EDITOR—I have recently seen an NSSF teaser advert in the newspapers reading: “You have been having questions about your NSSF savings! Watch this space”.

I gather NSSF management is planning a media campaign to ‘inform’ or ‘educate’ its members. I am also reliably informed about the price of the publication. If the campaign is to last for a month, how much of contributors’ money is going to be spent?

Whenever I see the word ‘NSSF’ I get nausea! A few weeks ago, I read that NSSF was donating more than sh180m to the Uganda Tennis Association.

And why tennis? How many NSSF contributors play or enjoy tennis anyway? Is this the most popular sport in the country? And how did they arrive on supporting such an elite sport?

As one of the contributors to NSSF, I wonder where these people in NSSF get power to waste our money like this! Why give away sh180m to an elite association when many workers who contribute to the NSSF can hardly afford two meals a day or school fees for their children?

Why can’t the Government change the NSSF Act so that workers can access their money after contributing for between five and 10 years? After such a period they should be entitled to access about 30% of their savings instead of letting it be devoured by banks and inflation.
