The UPDF is engaged in community service ahead of the Heroes Day celebrations in Hoima district. This year’s celebrations are dedicated to the late King of Bunyoro, Kabalega and will be held at the Booma play ground in Hoima town.

The day, marked on June 9, commemorates the National Resistance Army guerrillas who died during the liberation struggle between 1981 and 1986.

The army spokesman, Maj. Felix Kulaigye, on Thursday said the soldiers would renovate Kabalega’s tombs in Mparo village, monuments and health centres during the exercise, dubbed “heroes week”.

He said the celebrations were dedicated to Kabalega because of the spirit of patriotism and nationalism he demonstrated by fighting the colonialists.

The resident district commissioner, Martha Asiimwe, said three mass graves in which the bush war soldiers were buried would also be renovated.

“We are also dedicating the day to the living heroes, who share the same ideas with Kabalega like President Yoweri Museveni,” Asiimwe added.

She said the army would also join the residents in a cleaning exercise dubbed “Keep Hoima Clean”. Asiimwe said messages were being aired on radio stations to mobilise the residents on the role of patriotism in nation building.
