THE Presidential Awards Committee has recommended 2,800 people to be granted national honours.

The secretary, Businge Amooti, yesterday said the awards would be given out in phases if President Yoweri Museveni approves the nominees.

The committee has proposed 52 people for the Luweero Medal, 56 for Damu and 50 for Nalubale during today’s function to mark Heroes’ Day at Boma grounds in Hoima district.

Businge, however, declined to name the nominees.

He explained that Nalubale medal was to recognise both living and fallen heroes, while Damu is to be awarded to those who were wounded and killed in fighting.

If the recommendations are approved, this will be the first time honours are granted under the National Honours and Awards Act, 2001, Businge said.

The Act, which provides for establishment of the Presidential Awards Committee, was assented to by the President in 2005.

Museveni will be the guest of honour at this year’s celebrations.

Meanwhile, FDC officials have accused the Government of not inviting them to national events.

FDC vice-president Salaamu Musumba yesterday told journalists that they had never boycotted state functions.

She said the Government had failed to take up the multiparty dispensation where all political parties are key players in governance issues.

Responding to FDC’s claims, information minister Kabakumba Masiko said the Government sends out invites to all political parties for national functions.
