Residents of Kyomunembe village in Kagadi, Kibaale district were shocked when the Police exhumed the body of a woman who is suspected to have died during an abortion.

The deputy chief of medical services in the Police, Dr. Moses Byaruhanga, said Rose Mary Tuhaise’s body was exhumed to ascertain the cause of her death.

Byaruhanga said the move followed several complaints by Tuhaise’s relatives regarding her death. Tuhaise, 20, died on January 15, 2008 at Muhorro Stage Clinic and was buried the following day at her mother’s home in Kyomunembe.

The mother, Scovia Nyamahunge, said her daughter’s mysterious death unsettled her. “I was not told about her illness. That is why I requested for the body to be exhumed to clear my doubts,” she said.

The district Criminal Investigations Directorate chief, Michael Ogwal, denied the allegations that the Police mishandled the case.

He appealed to the residents to contact the Police before burying people who have died under suspicious circumstances.
