We must outgrow the 1986 ‘song’ and get on

EDITOR—Much as Ugandans appreciate that government has made huge strides in various sectors since 1986, it is disturbing when the reference to the pre-1986 era becomes a scapegoat for government flaws.

I wish they would refer to the previous year relative to the subsequent year’s progress.
That would measure substantive growth. But to use 1986 is absurd. Of course we have developed a lot since then. It has been a whole 23 years!

I feel it is selfish for a liberation government to believe that people owe them everything and it should, therefore, get away with any errors simply because “they fought”.

As a young man born in the NRM regime, i have heard older generations sometimes say we should vote for the NRM because Ugandans “can now sleep at night”.

Come on, that is well and good, but as the future generation we do not only want to sleep at night. We want quality in all sectors, accountability and wholesome, sustainable development.
