In P.5, we played football a lot while the girls watched and cheered us. One day, the girl I was interested in was among the girls cheering. I kicked a bottle I though was plastic.

I wanted to impress her with the power of my kick so, I immediately swung into action unaware that the bottle was glass. I lost a toe nail. My leg hurt, but I could not cry when she was watching. I went behind the classrooms and cried.

At school there were pens which had torches. I did not own one, but had a friend with the pen. I stole it from him and gave it to a girl I wanted to become my friend.

She accepted the pen and also agreed to be my friend. We often talked and became friends. I do not think my friend found out. If he saw her with the pen, he probably thought she owned one like his. I hope he never found out my little secret.

Barbie and I acted together at the National Theatre. One day we left late, around 7:00pm. Getting a taxi at that time was no piece of cake. You had to fight to get a seat. I had escorted her to board one going to Nsambya.

I fought like my life depended on it and sat to secure her seat. When the pushing and shoving settled, I made room for her to sit. I had not asked her out yet. I think that act won her over. We have now come a long way, married with two children.

Around S.3, my mum told me: “When you are trying to impress someone, the level at which you start should be the level you maintain for the next 50,000 years.” I have grown up knowing that. I never tried to out of the way to impress women. As I got more money, my standard went up.

Once I picked up my girlfriend (now my wife) from school (near Masaka), blindfolded her and drove her all the way to Jinja for a weekend away together. So you should set standards you can maintain.
