I get irregular periods

MENSTRUAL period changes are a symptom of some underlying physical or hormonal imbalance. Changes in the amount or timing of hormones released by the thyroid, adrenal, pituitary or hypothalamus glands may cause the ovary to delay or skip ovulation.

Dear Doctor,
I am 23 years old but I get irregular periods, sometimes skipping two months. Is this not a threat to my chances of getting pregnant?

Dear friend,
Menstrual period changes are a symptom of some underlying physical or hormonal imbalance. Changes in the amount or timing of hormones released by the thyroid, adrenal, pituitary or hypothalamus glands may cause the ovary to delay or skip ovulation.

Without ovulation, a period will not occur. One of the causes of missed ovulation is low body weight.

Sudden changes in exercise levels or in body weight may cause temporary changes in bleeding patterns. Emotional stress and physical illness are also common causes of menstrual irregularities, although the changes may not occur at the time of the perceived stress.

Certain drugs also have this effect. You need proper assessment by a gynaecologist. A comprehensive physical exam coupled with a number of tests will reveal the cause.

Also maintain your weight within a reasonable range, eat healthy and avoid emotional stress.
