PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has opened Kako Cathedral in West Buganda Diocese.

The church has been under construction for the last 45 years.

Speaking at the function on Friday, Museveni told the Christians to fear God not only in church but even outside church.

“I don’t regularly go to church but I fear God and that is why I work with my enemies,” Museveni said, adding that religion does not mean big and beautiful buildings.

He condemned acts of dishonsety, witchcraft and self-indulgence, which he said prevent development

He praised people from western Uganda, whom he said work together and help each other.

“That is what God-fearing people do and it is what I did when you called me here when you were still building this church,” Museveni said.

He blamed parents, who do not provide their children with lunch even when government relieved them of paying school fees.

The President said he would soon invite parents, and all other stakeholders to discuss the issue of lunch for children in schools, adding that many people blame the poor performance in schools on lunch.

Museveni said his main worry was giving mandate to head teachers to deny children their chance of going to school because they do not have money to pay for meals.

“We had slightly above two million children in primary schools before the introduction of the Universal Primary Education. Currently we have over eight million children in primary schools. Where will those who can pay for meals go when chased out of class?” he asked.

He said he would help the water and environment minister Maria Mutagamba to raise sh1.5b to extend piped water to Kako which is high on a hill compared to Masaka town from where water is pumped.

Museveni also said he would help in tarmacing the road towards Kako Cathedral and purchasing a vehicle for the bishop.
