A splendid show that included a Patrick Mwaka hole-in-one had Uganda edging closer to its second East Africa Golf Challenge title.

Uganda won six matches, drew one and lost one to get within touching distance of the trophy it last won in 2001 at the Kitante course.

Coach Amos Kamya’s side now requires just five out of a possible eight points to triumph at the par-71 Entebbe club’s lakeside course.
“The team is exhibiting good golf.

We sure should be able to wrap it up tomorrow,” noted Kamya, before adding that they will go for a cautious game.

“All we need are five points. So, why go out there and risk? We shall stick to the basics,” said the former Entebbe club professional.
Mwaka was not at his best, but when he teed off straight into the hole on the par-three number two, everyone applauded.

But Kamya will still replace him with Charles Muhenda in today’s round that will have the five nations battling in the singles.

Kamya has reason to constantly watch his back after a late surge by eight- time champions Kenya.

John Waigo, who captained the Uganda team that won in 2001, is confident the current home side has the potential to claim victory.

“They are not only enjoying good form, but also have the home advantage,” noted Waigo.

Uganda’s title charge is also spearheaded by Peter Sendawula, Brian Mwesigwa, Emmanuel Opio, Fred Wanzala, Ocici Onito and Vincent Byamukama.

Today’s prize giving ceremony and flag lowering will be preceded by a contest for the longest drive.
