THE numbers were not as big as the 45,000-strong crowd that saw Papa San perform at the same Makerere University ground in 2006, but then again this time it was not a free show like it was in 2006. So, many that parted with sh10,000 for the family show and sh2,500 for the students’ show on Friday and Sunday respectively, were still a remarkable attendance.

The fast-tongued Jamaican excited Christians with his typical Caribbean dance-hall rhythms, sparking crowds as lively as are rarely seen at concerts in Uganda.

The crowd sang along with Papa San’s Partoise (Caribbean form of Pidgin English) lyrics as though it were their native language. He took his fans through a reggae track he specially composed for Uganda, titled Africa Unite, in which he says unity is the only thing left for the abundant lively spirit and love of God to lead the continent to great heights.

Pastor Martin Ssempa, who flew in Papa San, said the singer ‘is like Bob Marley yet with the spirit and favour of God.’
