Kiyinda-Mityana diocese has started a project to ensure food security among Christians.

The Bishop, Joseph Zziwa, said the project would enable the people to have enough food to take them through the dry seasons.

This is one of the projects the diocese is embarking on in the new year, Zziwa said at the celebrations to mark the 28th anniversary of the diocese.

“We should revive the old system of preserving food, especially cereals. We should stop eating and selling off all that we harvest.

Each family must grow enough food to eat, sell and reserve for the future,” Zziwa emphasised.

He urged families to prepare special gardens to grow food that is specifically for storage.

“Our food security department has supplied seedlings and mobilised farmers. But a lot is still needed to grow more food and reserve it,” he added.

Zziwa also called upon Christians to construct latrines and ensure good sanitation in their homes.

He added that the diocese had also prepared a special project to preserve the environment.

“The forests have been cut and if we do not act immediately, we are likely to find ourselves in a desert.

This is not in Mityana only, but throughout the country. So, whoever cuts a tree should plant another,” Zziwa said.
