Head teachers and directors of schools in Rakai district should stop fundraising during functions because it is a waste of time and resources, Brig. Elly Kayanja has said.
He said parents who should have been the target of the fundraisings attend such functions to enjoy the entertainment by their children and not to contribute towards the development of the schools.
Kayanja was on Sunday presiding over the fundraising drive for St. Mary’s Primary School Mayanja in Kakuuto sub-county, Rakai district. He announced that he was attending the last fundraising in his life.
“Don’t ask me why but this is the last fundraising I am attending in my life,†he said. “I have tried my best to direct parents and teachers in this district on how to raise funds to maintain their schools but they have failed to learn,†Kayanja added.
He was reacting to comments raised by the school’s head teacher Kabuye, that he would not increase the school fees by even sh1,000 because parents would take their children out of the school.
Kayanja said it would be better for those intending to organise fundraising drives to print pledge cards and give them out to those they thought could part with some money to develop their areas.
“I have spent over sh1m to travel from Kampala to Rakai just to attend your function but you have not collected even sh2m,†Kayanja said.
“I’ll give you 10% of the total amount of money you will raise,†he added.
“Every woman here has made her hair and men are known for buying edibles alongside roads before they go back home,†he said.
“Why don’t you invest in your children to give them a better future?†Kayanja asked.
He blasted politicians who claim that he sent them to contest in the coming general elections, saying that if he was to do such a thing, he would do it to only his children like Ken Lukyamuzi did.
