EDITOR—I wish to add my voice to the issue of child sacrifice in this country. I condemn the vice in the strongest terms. every morally upright person is in panic for an urgent solution. The New vision of January 6 published a story in which the Inspector General of Police, Maj Gen Kale Kayihura, gives some suggestions how to end child sacrifice.
He suggests that there should be permanent deployment of officers to check vehicles and motorcycles and at random ask the children in the vehicles to identify the people in their company.
On the same page is a list of ritual murder cases ready for high court. The most strange thing is that most of the cases implicate the relatives of the victims such as children’s own fathers, uncles or grandmothers! The measure of checking vehicles and asking children to identify the people they are travelling with therefore needs to be judiciously managed.
Most of the sacrifices involve witchdoctors and the motive of acquiring wealth and maintaining it, drives people to commit such heinous acts.
I have a few proposals to make. There should be a crack down on all traditional shrines because that is where most of the body parts of victims have been found. All construction sites should be inspected from the time construction begins up to when it ends.Every community leader should be vigilant with the people in their charge. Leaders at all levels should be trained in community psychology and policing to be able to identify vices in society and deal with them judiciously.
The issue of poverty should also be addressed. It is possible that many of those involved in child sacrifice do it in despair and want to eke a living. Finally, all people should turn to christ for salvation.
