EDITOR—The health sector is one of the worst performers according to the 2006/2007 Auditor General’s report. Drug pilfering was cited as the biggest challenge to the sector.

The National Medical Stores (NMS) which is mandated to procure, store and distribute drugs in Government health facilities, has been accused for a long time of not carrying out its mandate. NMS’s initiative to label all Government drugs needs a lot of support from the Ministry of health and the entire Government.

Lack of drugs and other medical sundries in Government hospitals threatens this Government more than anything else. The NMS should have an upper hand in the procurement of all the drugs in the country.

Of course if NMS procures less than 50% of all the medicines consumed it is unfortunate. This means that the measure will fail. The health ministry should design a system which involves NMS in the event of any procurement of medicines. The public, especially the local authorities should support the NMS.
