Silent nights at Mateos

Since ‘downgrading’ from a quiet luxurious bar and restaurant to a mini club of sorts, Mateo’s had become Kampala central district’s wild party venue every Friday and Saturday nights.

But following recent arrests of managers in suburban clubs and bars playing loud music, it has been silent nights at Mateo’s.

A staff member at Mateo’s said they abandoned their Friday and Saturday carnivals because “we heard that we were next to be picked up. Since two years ago, two of our managers and a DJ were locked up because we were playing loud music in a ‘heavily residential area’, we weren’t about to take a chance.

” Mateo’s staff is accusing leading clubs and discotheques in the city to be behind their ‘closure’ because they were ‘stealing’ the crowds and averaging about sh20m over the weekend and secondly, they are not in a heavily residential area as they claim.

Maybe there is no conspiracy and it is true the blaring music was deafening residents living in the surrounding pearly ‘bungalows’ of Worker’s House, Telecommunication House, IPS building, Farmer’s House, Commercial Plaza and the Parliament.
