New Vision scribe wins Astor award

BARBARA Among, a journalist with The New Vision, has won the prestigious David Astor Journalism Award for 2009.
The award recognises emerging talent and potential of young journalists who excel in the profession.

Among said.
The David Astor Journalism Awards Trust, a London-based human rights charity, sponsors the award annually.
It aims at building effective journalistic capacity in Africa to defend human rights, promote good governance and socio-political development.
Established in 2005, the awards trust is in honour of the late Astor, editor of The Observer newspaper in London, where he worked for 27 years, until 1975.
Astor, who was a lifelong champion of African development and human rights, died in 2001.
Two other journalists scooped the same award. They were Jillo Kadida of the Daily Nation in Kenya and Erick Kabendera of The Guardian in Tanzania.
Three independent judges from the US, South Africa and the UK chose the winners.
“The three winners are talented and have a track record of perseverance. We are confident they will rise to the top of their profession,†the judges said in a joint statement.
Each of the winners will get sh975,000.
Lydia Namubiru, another journalist at The New Vision, was a runner-up and will receive an award of sh487,500.
