Police, RRU nab 39 suspects
KAMPALA
The Rapid Response Unit is holding people suspected to have stolen $30,000 (about sh60m) from former health state minister Captain Mike Mukula’s Bugolobi residence. They are Dan Katende, Robert Masiga, Julius Wabulo and Justine Nafuna. “Mukula received some guests from the US on March 5 and Masiga, the house boy, conspired with Katende, the shamba boy, to steal the guest’s money,” said Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba. They are part of the 39 suspects from different parts of the country that were paraded before the media at the RRU offices in Kireka yesterday.

KAMPALA
The Police in Kabalagala, are holding a suspected State House impostor for attempting to con a businessman, Mahesh Parekh, of money. Emmanuel Tibaijuka allegedly connived with an Internal Security Organisation operative, only identified as Lt. Masaaba and two others and threatened to arrest Parekh claiming he was manufacturing fake cement. “He said he was a member of a special task force commissioned by President Yoweri Museveni, to probe the collapse of buildings in the city,” Parekh explained.

FDC in national women training
KAMPALA
The Forum for Democratic Change is carrying out a national leadership training programme to sensitise women on leadership and participation in politics.
During a recent press briefing at the party headquarters, the party’s national secretary for information and publicity, Wafula Ogutu, said the programme was also targeting to sensitise women on their rights in political decision-making.
“Our target is to train women in leadership and positive political participation in which they can get involved in national decision-making,” Ogutu said. The party recenlty launched an organisation called “Women to win Uganda” that will engage in training of more women.

Employment policy expected
KAMPALA
An employment policy is being drafted and is expected to be ready in a month, according to the labour state minister, Dr. Emmanuel Otaala. He said the policy would be implemented by the beginning of the next financial year and will establish the rules and expectations relating to the employment of the people in the country. Otaala made the remarks while addressing the press at the Media Centre on the harmonisation of employment in the industrial sector recently. According to Otaala, the policy will include the minimum wage rate, which will have to be respected by all employers. Kenya and Tanzania, members of the East African Community, have already set up a minimum wage for workers. The chairman of the National Organisation of Trade Unions, Owere Wilson, also attended.

Mental health meet starts
KAMPALA
Mental Health Uganda and the secretariat for the Pan African Network for Users and Survivors of Psychiatry are hosting a week-long general assembly that starts today at the Pope Paul Memorial Hotel in Ndeeba. About 100 people under the umbrella, World Network of Users and Survivors of Psychiatry (WNUSP) based in Denmark, are expected to attend the meeting. Participants include members from Africa, Europe, Asia, and America. WNUSP brings together continental organisations of users and survivors of psychiatry.
