AISHA Nabukeera has not yet gone abroad for a skin-grafting operation because well-wishers have not fulfiled their pledges, The New Vision has learnt. The 14-year-old girl is to undergo surgery in the US but needs sh50m to cater for her accommodation, feeding and upkeep.

Nabukeera was in February 2006 allegedly burnt by her stepmother, who reportedly ordered her to wear a cloth soaked in fuel before lighting a candle.
Her guardian, Frank Gashumba, yesterday said they had only collected sh22m of the sh50m required.

This money will also cater for her mother, Sophie Nakandi, who will be the accompanying caretaker.

The pledges worth sh28.16m were made at fundraisings at Garden City and Theatre Labonita in Kampala in February and March.

“Some people would call me on radio and television talk-shows but when you get to them, they start tossing you around,” Gashumba said in an interview.

He gave the example of Laban Jemba and Alice Katiti, who he said had not delivered sh8.2m, and Kaddu Kiberu, who had not honoured an airticket pledge.

Gashumba explained that Jemba and Katiti had only delivered sh1.58m of the sh9.7m they had collected at Garden City.
He added that Men Against Violence and Victimisation, a Swedish group that pledged sh10m, only delivered sh5m.

Others are Aristoc Booklex, which has not honoured a sh2.5m pledge, Godfrey Kirumira, Peter Kiwanuka, Kampala City Council and Dr. John Mugezi , who pledged sh1m each.

Pastor Emma Kiryowa and Eng. James Zikusoka pledged sh0.6m each, while Leads Insurance Limited, Rev. John Kadadi, Hajji Moses Bukenya and Alan Kayiwa and Family each pledged sh0.5m.

Hajji Ahmed Kizito pledged sh0.8m, Ann Ayabwa sh0.4m, Hope Mwesigye sh0.2m, Joseph Kajura sh160,000, while Rehema Kasule and Allen Mwesigwa each pledged sh100,000.

Gashumba said he was forced to declare the unfulfilled pledges to clear the impression that he received all the money but was reluctant to take Nabukeera for the operation.

He added that much as she had healed, she sill required surgery to clear the scars.
