VETERANS who participated in the 1981-86 armed struggle will soon get loans, President Yoweri Museveni has said.

Speaking during a Bonna Bagaggawale sensitisation tour in Luweero Triangle last week, Museveni also castigated people who use the war as an excuse to remain poor.

“Even in areas like Iganga and Tororo where there was no war, poverty is still rampant. This is due to lack of knowledge about projects to undertake to earn better income,” said a statement from the State House.

After winning the protracted armed people’s war, Museveni noted, the Movement government had to “prioritise and concretise security to ensure that the defeated dictators would not return.”

He assured the locals that it was possible to eradicate poverty. “Running a country is like running a home, because one has to prioritise and deal with the most crucial aspects first. The Government prioritised education because it can harness one’s full potential.”

He urged Ugandans to change from subsistence to commercial farming to eradicate poverty. A development oriented person, he added, needed to know how much they earned and spent.

“Living without knowing what you earn and spend is like living in darkness. Being in a home without food and income should be a taboo.”

The President added that repairs on the Semuto– Kapeeka–Matugga road, would start by December, as the tendering process was almost complete.

Speaking later at Bikka in Masuliita sub-county, Wakiso district, Museveni expressed optimism that the wananchi (youth) had changed their social status.

Museveni also told the people to seek advice from sub-county chiefs who had undergone training at Kyankwanzi and had the skills to fight poverty.

At Mugogo St. John’s Church in Katikamu, Museveni said the country’s social problems would be addressed through forming savings and credit societies organisations (SACCOs).

The President donated sh10m to each of the three villages he visited. The money will boost income-generating activities in the areas.
