THE leader of the Rwenzururu Kingdom, Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere, has appealed to the Government to recognise his kingdom. Mumbere said the Obusinga deserved recognition because Dr. Crispus Kiyonga, the defence minister and Bukonzo West MP, had consented.

“The majority of the people respected my kingship but the minority, who are big wigs in the Government, did not. But the opposition to Obusinga has proclaimed itself. Dr. Kiyonga, who called himself their headmaster, has resigned and joined the pro-kingship camp,” Mumbere told his subjects at Hotel Africana in Kampala on Sunday.

Mumbere, who is in the country for his wedding and coronation anniversary scheduled for next month, said: “The Rwenzururu spirit is alive and I am sure our dreams will be achieved. I believe the recognition (of my kingdom ) will come soon and the signs are clear,” Mumbere said.

The Bakonzo people have been demanding recognition and Mumbere as their king but the issue has for long been a source of controversy with some people arguing that restoring the kingdom would be a waste of resources.

Kiyonga, who was presumed the leader of those opposed to the institution, recently changed his mind and said he had “dropped his guns” and urged his former followers to follow suit.
Mumbere thanked President Museveni for his efforts in recognising the Obusinga.
