LATE inclusion Nicholas Kiprono set a new national half marathon record as Uganda finished eighth overall in the World Road Running Championships.

Kiprono, who finished fourth in the national road championships last month, came home in 17th position, clocking one hour and 57 seconds. He however improved on his earlier-time of 1:1.36 which he set last year in Le Grande Monte.
Defending champion Tadese Zersanay of Eritrea won the second edition event held in the Italian City of Udine yesterday.

Kiprono was the best performing Ugandan of the four, with last year’s fourth placed Wilson Busienei coming a distant 27th, followed by James Kibet in 28th. National champion Isaac Kiprop finished 43rd out of 79 finishers.

It was Uganda’s worst performance in the last four years, having won bronze in the 2004 and finished sixth and fifth respectively in 2005 and 2006.

Meanwhile, Catherine Webombesa is the only Ugandan at the military games that started yesterday in Mumbai, India. She will compete in the 800m and 1500m events.
