Silence is golden. But no one ever told that to the disaster preparedness state minister, Musa Ecweru. The minister, largely considered a political heavyweight in the eastern region, (he is the region’s sole cabinet minister and spearheaded the fight against Kony in Teso, has of recent extended his weight to other non-political areas. Chief among these is the Church in Teso.

Ecweru (right) has been too critical of the way the Church conducts its affairs. He has been known to bitterly complain on radio talk shows about why the institution ignored appointing a cleric of Teso origin to head the Soroti Diocese instead of Emmanuel Obbo.

Ecweru argues that the Church in Teso needs a leader who knows the problems of the locals very well. He says the person should have grown or at least worked in Teso for a long time. But Ecweru’s stance has put him at loggerheads with the church.

At the recent inauguration of Obbo as the Bishop of Soroti Diocese, over which President Yoweri Museveni presided, the clerics saw it as a chance to get their pound of flesh.

The clerics introduced all the MPs to the president and left out Ecweru. If the minister ignored it as a minor glitch, he had another think coming. They went further to make sure there was no slot in the agenda for him to give a speech. The duty of speaking last and inviting the president was given to Soroti municipality MP Charles Ekemu.
