PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has appointed Makerere University vice-chancellor Prof. Livingstone Luboobi the acting chancellor. In a November 5 letter to Luboobi, the President said he had deferred the appointment of Prof. Gilbert Bukenya and Prof. Mondo Kagonyera for the post.

According to Bruce Balaba Kabasa, a university council member, the two nominees are still candidates for the post of chancellor.

“It is not true that the President has declined to appoint one of the people we forwarded for appointment. The letter only points out that Luboobi should act as chancellor until the President makes an appointment.” said Balaba, who was also a member of the chancellor search committee. There were media reports last week stating that the President had delayed the appointment of the chancellor, citing allegations of misconduct in the process. But Balaba insisted that the process was free and fair.

The university has not had a chancellor since October 23 when the Prime Minister, Apolo Nsibambi’s term expired.
