HE might not be much of a seller locally, but Eng Kateregga’s Internet music sales have had the singer laugh all the way to the bank lately.

HE might not be much of a seller locally, but Eng Kateregga’s Internet music sales have had the singer laugh all the way to the bank lately.

Meridah, the 2005 song that catapulted the then little-known Kateregga into the limelight, earning him a Pearl of Africa Music (PAM) award nomination, recently peaked at number four on MP3.com under the World Music Top 40 category, while Kyabazinga Afunvuwe peaked at number one under the World Folk Music Top 40 category. MP3.com ranks over three million songs worldwide under several categories.

They gauge the popularity of the songs according to the amount of radio airplay they receive, television appearances and Internet downloads.

For each Internet download, MP3.com pays the distributor $0.95 (about sh1,600), while for each radio and TV play, the distributor gets $0.45 (about sh800). Eng. Kateregga’s music is distributed by www.starsofafrica.com and is entitled to 40% of the total royalties received from his songs.

The site also sells music by internationally acclaimed stars like Akon, Eminem and 50 Cent, in different categories.
