EDITOR—Recently, I wanted an office assistant and placed an advertisement in The New Vision. I was overwhelmed by phone calls and developed a headache. For two days I could not use my phone, because it seems the whole country was calling me, and my phone was permanently busy and I had to keep charging it!

This woke me up to the realisation that unemployment is a big problem in Uganda. Some people would call and desperately beg for the job, yet I had only one vacancy.

I do not know what it will take this country to address the problem because poverty, crime, depression and even the HIV/AIDS scourge among many other dangers are being propelled by unemployment, especially among the youth. It is a plague that is sweeping through the nation, breaking families and some people will lose the will or nerve to work. Sadly, it is the young, energetic people who are the backbone of our future who are hit most.

We can easily lose a generation because of the uncertainty and the social calamities that our young people are facing. I call upon the Government and all leaders in the country to seriously address the problem of unemployment.
