CASSIA Lodge boasts that its balcony holds the best view of Kampala. Now, ofcourse you are skeptical. Kampala (Kalerwe notwithstanding) can be quite scenic when it feels like it and there are plenty of very interesting views to be found around here.

You will have to have something really stunning on hand before you can even begin to suggest that what you have might be the best of all possible views of the city.

Well, when you go to Cassia you will regret your skepticism. Your eyes will pop the hell out of your cynical head. This could very credibly be the best view of Kampala.

It is situated in Buziga, on top of one of those hills, so I don’t have to give you the price range as I usually do at the end of these reviews.

It is expensive. There were just two of us for dinner and we blew past sh50,000. My date was generous.

Cassia Lodge is not just a restaurant. It is a fully-equipped resting establishment with room service and a swimming pool and if they were looking at the city from closer they would not have called it a “lodge” knowing what that term denotes in our alleys and byways.

The hotel, (for that is what it is) is frequently used by investors and NGO workers, but that does not stop you from paying a visit because occasionally your wallet is also heavy enough to roll with that sort of budget.

After floating through their elegant halls and up their stairs you will find the eating area, where you have the choice of the open air terrace or the sheltered indoor dining room. Go outside.

You need to sit outside to be fully gobsmacked by the view. You will have quick and charming waiters or waitresses who will offer you good service.

They will bring you nice food. I enjoyed mine thoroughly and so did my date.

The menu leans towards the African side, but still manages to sound exotic. I have just looked at their website, though — www.cassialodge.com — and it all still sounds delicious.

You will all-in-all have a good dining experience but all that will become secondary after you stand on that balcony and see the city’s dazzling lights stretch out to the horizon beneath you.
