MEN do not usually care about cleaning. Often, you can tell if you have walked into a male-dominated house — it is likely to be dirty. Patricia says when she first met her husband, he was living with his brother and their house was one big mess.

“They would eat food and leave the plates under the bed. He never washed his bedding and yet expected me to sleep over. The floor hardly saw a broom, let alone a mop. I almost walked away,” she says. But she helped them get someone to clean twice a week.

Many parents find it hard to keep a clean home, especially with young children who like to run around the house cluttering the place with their toys. Maureen says her children are only allowed to play outside or inside their rooms. The kitchen, bathroom and living room are no-go areas.

If someone made an unexpected visit to your home, what would they see? Are your children afraid to invite their friends over because your house is a mess? How often do you clean your house?

How often do you clean the hard-to-reach places like under the chairs or bed?

Cleaning tips
Keeping a clean house is not easy, especially if you have a full time job and a family to care of. The trick to keeping a cleaning home is to prioritise; while some areas need to be cleaned daily, some areas can be cleaned once a week.

You do not have to wash clothes everyday, but you certainly have to wash the dishes, make the bed and mop the floor daily.

Use the weekend to deal with laundry, clean the house and hard-to-reach areas like under the sofa, dusting furniture, electrical appliances and window sills. Clean the fridge once a week and get rid of spills and stale foods.

People sweat while they sleep and others do not bathe before going to bed. Bedsheets should be washed and changed every week or once every two weeks. The towel should be washed every week.

If you spill anything on the floor, on the sofas or clothes, clean it up immediately to reduce the chance of permanent stains.

Pick up anything that falls on the floor immediately to avoid clutter.
