Lightning kills pupil

ONE pupil died instantly and two others were injured when lightning struck a school dormitory at Alpha Nursery and Primary Boarding school in Amac sub-county, Lira district on Monday.

ONE pupil died instantly and two others were injured when lightning struck a school dormitory at Alpha Nursery and Primary Boarding school in Amac sub-county, Lira district on Monday.

The children had reported back that day for the third term studies when the 8:30pm incident took place. Parents thronged the school on Tuesday morning to know the fate of their children follwing the news on various radio stations.

The head teacher, Patrick Muzima, said the lightning killed Isaac Odongo, who was asleep in his bed. Muzima identified those admitted at Ronam Clinic in Lira town as Martin Okello of P.7 and Boniface Omia of P.6.

Okello was sleeping next to the deceased while Omia was bathing outside when the thunderbolt hit the dormitory. A medical officer at Ronam clinic, who preferred anonymity, said the Okello and Omia were in good condition and waiting for the doctor to give advice before they could be discharged.

In another incident during the same night, a hailstorm destroyed over 100 acres of crops in Acede parish. An LC5 councillor, Patrick Ocen, said over 500 people were affected.
