THE Uganda Revenue Authority surpassed its tax collection targets by sh29b during the first two months of the 2009/2010 financial year. “We adapted new systems like e-tax, which has enabled better tax service and education.

“This has helped reduce on client non-compliance,” Allen Kagina, the tax body commissioner general, said at the tax-payer’s dinner at the Kampala Serena Hotel.

The dinner marked the end of the tax-payers appreciation week and was also to celebrate 18 years of the tax body’s existence. It was held under the theme, “Mobilising resources in the face of global economic challenges.”

It saw a number of tax-payers walk away with prizes. Kagina said the authority had adapted a modern system that had enabled them to offer better services.

She also noted that the time taken for tax clearance at border posts had been reduced from five days to one day. Speaking at the same function, Syda Bbumba, the finance minister, thanked the tax body and the tax-payers for contributing to the growth of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).

“Our tax revenue has grown from sh180b in 1991 to sh3.6 trillion, which accounts for 20% of our GDP. “This is good, although I am waiting for the day our GDP will be solely funded by our tax revenue,” Bbumba stressed.

Baker Hughes Ltd. emerged overall winners of the URA Excel Award for 2008/2009 after getting tax returns of sh8.379b. This was a growth of 507%, while United Bank of Africa was the runner-up with tax returns of sh1.72b, indicating 437% growth rate.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner General has said Uganda is to host the Africa tax forum from November 18-19. “URA has become a major tax collection player in the region.

“That is why we were chosen to host the upcoming tax forum,” Kagina said.
