Dear Doctor,
My son is four-years-old. The problem is he scratches his private parts to the extent of bleeding. This has been going on for a while. I have visited some clinics and they have always given him antibiotics which have not helped. Kindly help. Where can I take him to get proper medications?

Dear BNB,
THE more common causes of a penile rash in children include dermatitis which is an allergic reaction that may be a reaction to food, soaps, clothing material etc.

The other common causes in children include a skin condition known as psoriasis. Eczema a hereditary disorder of the skin may also cause intense itching associated with scaly rash.

It is usually aggravated by ingestion of particular foods such as milk, nuts and red meat. Poor hygiene could also explain your child’s symptoms.

He should get a thorough bath everyday and this should be done with the help of an adult. Infections such as scabies, lice, and fungal infections such as taenia can also explain the itch.

Most of these are related to poor hygiene. Visit a skin specialist.
