A LOCAL NGO, African Revival, is linking 73 primary schools in northern Uganda to those in the UK.

The programme will facilitate exchange visits for teachers to improve the academic standards in Gulu and Amuru districts.

Justin Okot, the Gulu Police Primary School coordinator, said they received sh3m from Hinchley Wood School in the UK to buy plastic chairs, music and drama instruments, costumes, three laptops and a projector.

Since 2007, eight teachers in the two districts have visited their partnering schools in the UK to share experiences, while the pupils kept in touch through letters.

The pupils’ representatives, Daniel Comboni and Brenda Atimango, said exchanging letters with their counterparts in the UK had helped them improve their writing skills.

Joshua Jones, a teacher from the UK who is based at Pece Cubu Primary School, called on partnering schools in the UK to donate 350 pounds (sh1m) each year to improve the infrastructure in Ugandan schools.
