PARLIAMENT has finally secured a title for its land. The spokesperson, Hellen Kawesa, said the land title was secured last month from the Uganda Land Commission.

Construction of a new parliamentary chamber had delayed due to failure to secure the land title.

Kawesa said Parliament had already submitted a structural design of the new chambers to Kampala City Council (KCC), and if approved, construction would begin this financial year.

“We still have a few issues to sort out with KCC, but everything is ready, and construction will begin anytime KCC approves our plan,” Kawesa said.

Appearing before the legal committee in August, Obabalur Okello, the deputy clerk in charge of finance and administration, said though the title existed, it was shared by Parliament and Radio Uganda among other departments.

He added that the problem had been complicated by the desire by Parliament to acquire the Commonwealth Green Belt, which belongs to the Ministry of Finance.
