THE Police in Kasese district, with the help of a street child, have recovered a gun and 21 bullets.

The acting district CID chief, Vincent Ebiot, said the 11-year-old street boy had gone to ease himself in an unfinished building in Nyakasanga when he saw a polythene bag which he thought was containing opium or some other stolen material. On opening it, he found a gun.

The child said he first prayed, thinking he had discovered riches abandoned by thieves only to find a rifle wrapped in a bag. He immediately called the local councillors who reported the matter to the Police.

The outgoing district Police commander, Christopher Kasalawo, said the gun was stolen from Rukoki Prison on November 12.

Following the disappearance of the gun, Sgt. Justus Bwambale, attached to the prison, was arrested to help the Police in investigations but died in custody after he was allegedly tortured by investigators.

Kasalawo said they had arrested the suspects who had been using the gun but could not disclose their identities as four others were still at large.

He added that the gun is thought to have been used by the suspects to kill a resident in Kisanga village in Kasese town.

Meanwhile, Bwambale’s relatives have petitioned the Office of the President and the Judiciary over the release of four officers arrested in connection with his death.

A document dated December 7, addressed to the Chief of Defence Forces, Aronda Nyakairima, and copied to various officials, stated that the suspects were released without justice taking its course.
