THE establishment of Mayuge Sugar Industry will increase sugar production and reduce its high demand, G.M. Sugar’s managing director Mukesh Makwana has said, writes Donald Kiirya.

Makwana said they had no problem with their fellow Indian investors building the sugar factory in Mayuge.

The $10m (about sh17b) investment is located in Mayuge about 16km from Kakira Sugar Works (KSW).

“Uganda needs foreign investors to set up more industries so that the locals get jobs and develop,” Mukesh said on the sidelines of celebrations to welcome the New Year at Jinja Town Hall.

He said the supply from Kakira, Kinyara and Sugar Corporation of Uganda was not sufficient to meet the demand.
Mukesh said they want to strive for promotion of investment in Uganda in order to reduce unemployment.

“We want to see that sugar prices are also reduced from sh800 to sh600 per kilogramme at a retail price and the price of cane crashed in sugar factories increases from between 38,000 tonnes and 39,000 to 50,000 and 60,000 so that sugarcane growers benefit more.”
