SPORTS Club Villa is making a fair attempt at imitating the kind of football that until the early nineties attracted Ugandans to stadia in droves.

The Jogoos match on Friday with champions URA was the latest in their string of entertaining displays. The effortless ball control, dummies, back heel flicks, good positioning, passing and shooting were all there in that late match at Namboole.

So, why are the Jogoos the most attractive Super League side? The answer lies in Villa Park’s implementation of what other clubs have for years stubbornly ignored.

Villa has gone back to the basics by establishing a youth structure.

The team that’s shinning now has been together for close to five years. They started out in the club’s underage side Jogoo Young, were taught basics by Paul “latest” Nkata and Ibrahim Kirya before graduating to the senior side.

Virtually all the world’s leading football clubs derive their strength from strongly founded youth structures.

You’ve definitely not forgotten the famed Ajax academy that brought forth superstars like Nwankwo Kanu, George Finidi, Clarence Seedorf and Patrick Kluivert.

Likewise Manchester United’s side that won the historic 1999 treble almost entirely comprised of products from the club’s youth academy structure.

KCC’s golden years in the seventies and eighties largely had to do with nurseries like City Cubs.

Talents tapped from Nakawa and Naguru grounds neighbouring KCC’s Lugogo base would be drafted into the City Cubs just like Express thrived on Wembley Boys.

The concept of youth structures can also be illustrated with national teams. It’s those countries with solid underage programmes that have built formidable national side.

This is some food for thought for new technical director Edgar Watson.
