My son’s urine has a bad smell

Apr 27, 2008

YOUR son may be suffering from a urinary tract infection. With such an infection, bacteria get into the bladder and/or other organs of the urinary tract. Its symptoms include passing smelly urine, pain when urinating and blood in urine.

Dear Doctor,
My three-year-old son’s urine has been smelling so badly for a long time. I thought it would stop with time but it has not. What could be the cause, and how can it be cured?
Nelson

Dear Nelson,
YOUR son may be suffering from a urinary tract infection. With such an infection, bacteria get into the bladder and/or other organs of the urinary tract. Its symptoms include passing smelly urine, pain when urinating and blood in urine.

You should take your son to a doctor and get his urine tested for proper diagnosis and treatment.

The doctor may also want to find out why your son has got the infection. So other investigations may be done to make sure the cause is identified and treated.
