FORMER students of Kiira College Butiki and Busoga College Mwiri in Jinja district have paid tribute to the late Robert H. Freak, describing him as a great science teacher.

Freak, who taught at Mwiri before becoming the headmaster of Butiki from 1962 to 1970, died recently at the age 93.

He was buried at his home in England. Freak came to Uganda in 1939 courtesy of the Church Missionary Society of England and returned home in 1970.

At a commemoration service led by the Rev. Can. John Bagenda at Kiira College Butiki, former Kagoma county MP Frank Nabwiso said Freak was an exceptional chemistry and physics teacher.

“During the period he headed this school (Butiki), its physical infrastructure and students’ enrolment increased tremendously,” he said. Nabwiso commended Freak for instilling discipline and religious values into his students, saying his efforts influenced many young men to become Born-again Christians.

“Four of them later became bishops in the Church of Uganda. They include the late Bishop Misaeri Kauma (Namirembe Diocese) and Dr. Michael Kyomya,” he said.

James Kisubi, who replaced Freak as headmaster of Butiki in 1970, praised him for laying a strong foundation for the school.

Kisubi said Freak strived to ensure that the science laboratories were well equipped.
