DEO Akope was in devastating form, firing six under par 66, his best score of the season, to the lead the professional category in the Housing Finance Corporate golf tournament at Kitante yesterday.

Akope lined back-to-back birdies on the first five holes. The Uganda Professional Golfers Association captain had three more birdies on the back nine, but bogeyed on 10 and 15
Akope takes a six-stroke cushion over second-placed Godfrey Mande into the second round of the 36 holes event that ends today.

The leader came within one shot of equalling his own course record that he matched as an amateur in the 2000 edition of the Uganda Open.

“When I started with consecutive birdies, I had a feeling I may close in on the course record. I would have loved to set a new record but those bogeys let me down. I have really been playing well nowadays. I was not surprised by the good score. I will try to keep it up tomorrow (today),” an overjoyed Akope remarked.

Amos Kamya (73) and Rwandan Emmanuel Ruterana (75) were third and fourth respectively. Stephen Birungi and Herman Mutaawe tied in fifth position, 10 strokes off the pace. Dickson Kagoro and Sadi Atibu trailed with 77 apiece.

The main event, with 130 golfers invited by the Housing Finance, tees off today at 1:00pm on the same course. It will be a short-gun tee off. The tournament will be crowned with a prize-giving ceremony at the Uganda Golf Club.

The event is sponsored by Housing Finance, who have catered for operational expenses and prizes for the outstanding performers in in the various categories.
