Dear Dr,
I have a problem called balanitis? Is it curable?
Charles

Dear Charles,
BALANITIS is inflammation of the head of the penis. Symptoms include itching, redness, discharge, wounds and pain.
It is more common when one is not circumcised. The inflammation may involve the foreskin, making it swell and too tight to pull back.

Balanitis is associated with poor hygiene and the foreskin may be unable to roll back from the head of the penis.
Balanitis can also be caused by a number of things.

The most common is candida, but other fungal infections, skin diseases and irritation from chemicals can also cause it. Syphilis and diabetes may cause it.
Balanitis is treatable, so you need to see a doctor.

Depending on the cause, a cream or other medicine is given to control the infection and inflammation. If there is an underlying problem like diabetes, it needs to be controlled.

Circumcision may be recommended in some cases. Make sure you clean the head of the penis while bathing at least once a day. Roll back the foreskin and underneath.

Balanitis is a common condition which quickly responds to treatment.
