CAREER GUIDANCE

I am a trained nursing assistant working in a private clinic. I have A’ Level, with 5 points in PCB (1 principle pass) in Biology and O’ Level with good credits in sciences and the rest of the arts subjects.

I am interested in doing a diploma in Nursing. Can I get a vacancy on government sponsorship? When is the next intake? Which nursing courses am I eligible for as per my academic results and from which nursing schools?

A.M, Kampala

TO qualify for such a diploma, you need to have obtained at least one principle pass and two subsidiaries in principle papers — Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Special emphasis is put on passing Biology.

With many students vying to join the medical profession, the competition for government slots is stiff. According to the Department of Higher Education in the education ministry, there are limited vacancies on government sponsorship against hundreds of deserving applicants.

To stand a chance, you will, therefore, have to compete with so many students who have done the same subjects, applied for the same course and perhaps have even better grades.
Should the above turn out to be a tall order for you, consider the following options:

- If you are bent on pursuing a career in nursing, you can use your O’ Level results to apply for a certificate in enrolled comprehensive nursing.

According to Mercy Mugowa, a Senior Education Officer in charge of admissions and scholarships in the Ministry of Education and Sports Department of Higher Education, you need to have obtained at least passes (that is 7 or 8) in English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics to qualify for this course.

These courses are offered at Arua, Kabale, Lira and Jinja Nursing schools. Interviews are held between September and October and the academic year starts in November.

- Should you want to consider a career outside nursing, your subject combination can lead you to courses in Sports Science and Agriculture (Double Main). You are also eligible for a diploma in, among other courses, Forestry, Agro-Forestry and Fisheries, tenable at Nyabyeya Forestry College.
Weigh your options carefully. Good luck.
