Known by fans as Pablo, Kenneth Kimuli, 29, is a popular comedian with The Theatre Company.
“Acting has been my passion right from my childhood. It is in my genes. My mother was an entertainment prefect,†he says.
This was realised by teachers and peers alike. As class monitor, Kimuli maintained control, but no one was punished and everybody was happy thanks to his humour.
Today Kimuli is the productions director for Rockpoint 256, a radio soap opera for young people. He also presents a morning talk show called ‘Go’ on Power FM.
Pablo hails from western Uganda and jokes that one has to wear a jacket to cushion the greeting of hearty slaps to the shoulders. He describes himself as an ‘academic tourist’ because he studied countrywide. He studied in Kampala up to P.4 but went to high school in Mbarara. He graduated from Namasagali University in 2003 with a degree in mass media, creative writing and journalism.
The secret behind his comedy is that he spots day-to-day happenings that people overlook. “Most stories are derived from things I went through or a friend did. The best jokes are about yourselfâ€.
Judging by the waves of uncontrollable laughter, people strongly relate to his wit. Pablo’s unique performances, inspired by Bill Cosby, are cleverly worded.
He acts outside comedy as well, and has directed and written plays. In 2006, he directed Buried in the Dark and One Night Stand, writing the latter. Another of his plays, Madness is Coming will show in November. Pablo’s comedy may soon become commercially available. “I have a genius working on a website,†he says.
He plans to compile a DVD of the 30 performances he has done since October 2007, when Nation Television started filming.
He plans to return to university to study film production. He is single, but “listening to the wind†for the right girl, and hopes to marry in a few years.
The Theatre Company humours audiences every Thursday at the National Theatre for sh5,000 per person. The skits are done in Luganda and English and are a guaranteed laugh.
